This website was designed as an introduction to a  fourth grade social studies unit. The unit covers several areas including:
  • The importance of helping a community in need
  • Wisconsin's past and present agriculture
  • Connections between local community and other places in Wisconsin
  • Ways in which different cultures meet their basic needs

The creation of the webquest along with the unit was based on the Wisconsin Department of Instruction Teaching Standards:

Social Studies, Standard E: Behavioral Science
E.4.12 Give examples of important contributions made by Wisconsin citizens, United States citizens, and world citizens
E.4.13 Investigate and explain similarities and differences in ways that cultures meet human needs

Social Studies, Standard A: Geography
 Grade 4A.4.7 Identify connections between the local community and other places in Wisconsin, the United States, and the world

Agricultural Education, Standard A: Global Agricultural Systems
A.4.1 Understand how products made from plants and animals are made available for use by people

Assessment
The following tasks are included in the rubric to assess student learning:
  • Completion of all student procedures
  • Participation in class discussions regarding webquest
  • Garden Map includes: clear labels, colorful images, evidence of knowledge learned from webquest
  • One paragraph description of garden including garden arrangement and plants/ crops include

Adaptations for students:
  • Extra Support: Ask students to only complete one question from each site if the allotted time is not enough for these students. The final project map and writing criteria can also be altered for these students.
  • Challenge: Students should be challenged to find more information from another relevant websites or books provided by the teacher. Students who excel in writing can be asked to write additional information to accompany their garden map.
